In the game, the player controls a mouse collecting pieces of cheese placed randomly around a map. The title is in all caps because there is a lot of art here. To complete their objective, players receive the help from the Shaman, a mouse who can summon objects and create buildings. Transformice was inspired by the 2008 video games Aaaah! and Fish, made by "Tigrounette". In May 2010, along with the designer Mélanie Christin, "Tigrounette" released Transformice.

In January 2015, the game was released on the Steam software distribution service. Shortly after its release, the game became a trending topic on 4chan's /v/ (videogames) board. On June 19th, 2010, YouTuber EvilDaedalus uploaded a video titled "Meet the mouse", featuring a tutorial of the game. The video received over one million views in the next five years.
